Resident Doctor, Barts Health NHS Trust

“So you want to be a doctor?” Last weekend was Melanin Medics’ Aspiring Medics Conference — an annual conference dedicated to empowering and upskilling medically-minded students of black heritage from across the UK. Titled “so you want to be a doctor?”, with this conference we really wanted to push the boundaries of professional imagination. Why can’t you be a doctor? Why is a future in medicine something that you’ve never felt allowed to seriously consider? The reality is that social barriers continue to disadvantage, often so deeply as to negatively impact on ambition itself. But crucially, our ambition should never be limited by what others see for us. I suppose that’s the tweet. You are worthy of the loftiest dreams, and more importantly, you can make them happen! And on Saturday, I met 40 incredibly bold students who will most definitely make their dreams happen.
It was an event that I am very proud of, and one of the highlights of my time with Melanin Medics. Thank you to Giulia and Dr Olamide Oguntimehin for months of preparation. Thank you to Dr Ola Olabintan, Anabelle, Solape, our General Medical Council representatives and the entire MM team, without whom the day would not have been possible 🤎
