🧵🪡✂️The space between stitches is thinking time…✂️🧵🪡 …The running stitch sets the pace for thoughts to settle onto the fabric in my lap. It’s a special moment where the hand and mind are working together. That haptic process of making is central to my creative practice. Stitch is a big part of that process for me. It’s when I feel my ideas are at their most creative and the possibilities seem endless. At the moment, I’m working on a large artist book for a residency in May with Cornwall’s archive centre, Kresen Kernow. The book is about the life of an amazing woman who lived nearly 300 years ago called Catherine Payton Phillips. A complex character who didn’t follow the conventional path for women at that time, that’s what makes her so interesting. The book is slowly evolving and changing with every stitch and piece I attach. It’s made from a vintage quilt that was given to me. The piece is about the bond between people that’s often frayed, patched and mended. It’s a reflection of a woman’s life that was full of determination, but also duty to others. The artist Louise Bourgeois said, “I am not what I am, I am what I do with my hands.” This is so true. Creating with our hands is such an important part of us. It’s often dismissed, overlooked or forgotten. Yet, it could be one of the fundamental things to get us through these challenging times and to find ourselves again in all the chaos. Thanks for reading, Vicki 🧵🪡✂️
