This World Oceans Day, we're reflecting on what it takes to support one of the ocean's most vital ecosystems. Kelp forests are ecological powerhouses. Kelp can grow up to 1% of its total length per day, and kelp forests block over 90% of light to the seafloor, creating shaded habitats for marine life. They reduce ocean acidification and strengthen coastal resilience against climate change. veritree has been working with planting and corporate partners to grow kelp spores in a dedicated hatchery on Vancouver Island, then outplant them into the waters off Prevost Island, B.C. By supporting the earliest, most fragile stages of the kelp lifecycle in controlled conditions, we give each spore the best possible chance of survival in the ocean.
