Preserving his culture with light: In 1885, Albrecht Meydenbauer founded the world's first photogrammetric institution. His goal was to develop photogrammetry technology and techniques that would allow him to use cameras to capture the dimensions of the buildings and architectural wonders that he believed stood at the heart of German culture. To accomplish his goal, Meydenbauer combined a Pantoskop wide-angle lens with measuring crosshairs imaged directly onto the photo plate during exposure. This device would form the basic elements of all future photogrammetric cameras.
