🇸🇻 Less than 10% of the wastewater generated throughout the Metropolitan Area of San Salvador is currently treated before being discharged into the surrounding water bodies. Veolia | Engineering & Consulting is proud to support Administración Nacional de Acueductos y Alcantarillados ANDA in designing the new San Salvador East Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), a landmark infrastructure project for the country's capital city. The challenge is significant, as the 40+ existing WWTPs are small, spatially dispersed, and often underperforming in terms of treated effluent quality. In the eastern districts of San Salvador, a bold solution is taking shape: a greenfield sewerage treatment facility for Apopa and Aguilares, linked to a 20 km interceptor, with a treatment capacity of 1.5 m³/s, designed to serve a population of over 500,000 inhabitants. Over the coming year, our experts will undertake the following key tasks included in the project: 🔹 Topographical and geotechnical site investigations 🔹 Wastewater flow and quality assessment, including future coverage and effluent projections 🔹 Treatment process selection for both wastewater and sludge, and recovery potential study for wastewater (REUSE), sludge, and biogas 🔹 Preliminary design and OPEX/CAPEX modelling 🔹 Preparation of tender documents for detailed design and construction works 🔹 Preliminary environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) ⚡ Built for circularity: the plant's target design will integrate biogas recovery and cogeneration of electricity and heat, in order to power the operations of the future facility and potentially feed energy surplus back into the national grid. 🌱 Beyond infrastructure, this project is about implementing and accelerating ANDA's strategic vision for sustainable sanitation in San Salvador, reducing environmental pollution, protecting rivers and lakes from untreated effluent, and improving the lives of many Sansalvadoreños.
