🇰🇿 Kazakhstan's 2025 Sowing Campaign: Flax Takes Center Stage in Agricultural Diversification 🌱 As of mid-June 2025, Kazakhstan has completed its spring sowing campaign. According to the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan: 📈 Key figures of the 2025 sowing campaign: • Total sown area: 23.7 million hectares, up by ~500,000 ha compared to 2024 • Oleaginous crops reached a record 3.3–3.4 million hectares (+365–378 thousand ha) 🌾 Oil flax has become the main beneficiary of diversification efforts: • Total flax area increased to ~1 million hectares • Breakdown of oilseeds: flax – 1 million ha, sunflower – 1.3 million ha, safflower – 421.5 thousand ha, rapeseed – 178.6 thousand ha 📊 Forecast for the 2024/25 marketing year: • Expected gross harvest of oil flax: ~453.4 thousand tons, a +40% increase year-on-year • Export volumes are projected to reach ~500 thousand tons This growth is driven by strong demand, especially from the EU, where a 20% import duty is currently imposed on Russian flax. Starting next year, this duty will increase to 50% for flax originating from Russia and Belarus. Meanwhile, Canada’s flax production is expected to remain modest, not exceeding 230 thousand tons. By comparison, annual flaxseed imports in the EU amount to approximately 600 thousand tons. 💡
