Funding pressures. Market headwinds. The sheer complexity of bringing cures to patients. Every corner of the cell and gene therapy ecosystem is feeling the strain, from early-stage development to manufacturing capacity. In a recent Pharma's Almanac roundtable, Vector BioMed COO Michael Kadan, PhD MBA, shared his take on how these challenges are reshaping the CDMO landscape: "Uncertain federal funding, recent safety concerns with some gene therapies, and a tight economic environment are causing developers to delay or cancel programs […] From a CGT CDMO perspective, we've seen a step back in specialization and services from many CDMOs." Capacity lost to safer modalities doesn't come back quickly, and developers caught in that gap feel it immediately. Innovation slows, and the path from concept to cure grows longer for patients waiting on next-generation therapies. 2026 continues to be a pivotal year as developers and CDMOs rebuild capacity and realign partnerships, not just to sustain innovation, but to ensure the therapies being developed today reach the patients who need them tomorrow.
