Each year towards the end of winter, when the snow is at its deepest, we head into the Swedish mountains to measure snow depth and density. By combining manual measurements, helicopter radar and data from remote weather stations, our hydrologists build a clearer picture of how much water is stored in the snow — and how the spring flood may unfold. These measurements form the basis for decisions on water regulation and hydropower production, long before the snow begins to melt. That long-term planning is a way to ensure a stable supply of fossil-free electricity, and more predictable energy for homes and businesses.
