Human rights belong to everyone. Human rights need everyone. On June 24, the fifth march for justice in Türkiye took place in Strasbourg, in front of the Council of Europe. I wasn't able to participate, but I wanted to tell you a little about it. 📢 A new call to the Council of Europe for the implementation of ECtHR jugements in Türkiye 🕊️ organised by the Peaceful Actions Platform, a broad coalition bringing together many partner organisations, civil society actors, human rights defenders, lawyers, victims’ groups and volunteers from across Europe 🤔 What's the problem? ⚖️ Judicial independence and the rule of law Tight control over the judicial system, frequent refusal to implement rulings by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) or its own Constitutional Court, imprisonment of prominent civil society figures ⚡Political repression Widespread use of "terrorism" charges to neutralize the opposition: the main opposition party (CHP), the pro-Kurdish movement (DEM), the Gülen movement 📢 Right to protest and freedom of association Peaceful protests (whether by students, environmentalists, or feminists)... 📰 Media freedom and freedom of expression Arbitrary legal proceedings for "insulting the president" or "disinformation," regular blocking of platforms, and bandwidth throttling during major political events 🌈 Women's and minority rights Withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention despite hundreds of femicides each year Increased discrimination against LGBTI+ people, attempts to ban organizations defending their rights, and bans on Pride marches 🤕 Torture and impunity About the Gülen movement 'The Gülen movement or Hizmet movement (Turkish: Gülen hareketi ) is an international social, educational and Islamic fraternal movement founded by Fethullah Gülen in Turkey in the late 1970s and based in the U.S. since 1999.'
