I am very happy to share the publication of our new paper in Kew Bulletin describing Machaerium guidone, a remarkable new species from the Brazilian Caatinga. This study was based on detailed field and herbarium investigations, including morphological analyses, type specimen examination, and taxonomic comparisons across the genus. In addition to describing the new species, we provided information on its habitat, distribution, phenology, conservation status, IUCN assessment, illustrations, and a revised identification key for all Machaerium species occurring in the Caatinga. The discovery of Machaerium guidone reinforces how much botanical diversity still remains to be documented, especially in seasonally dry tropical forests, and highlights the importance of continued taxonomic research and conservation efforts. The species was named in honor of Dr. Niede Guidon, in recognition of her extraordinary contributions to science, archaeology, and the conservation of the Caatinga and the Serra da Capivara region, whose legacy continues to inspire Brazilian science and biodiversity protection. This work also received significant media attention and was widely featured in interviews and scientific outreach channels, helping bring plant taxonomy and biodiversity conservation closer to the public. 📄 Publication link: https://lnkd.in/d6fXnEEN 📰 Interviews and media coverage: https://lnkd.in/d8eQSQYj https://lnkd.in/dSCiC3tS https://lnkd.in/dPM257ix https://lnkd.in/dstgMmDQ I am deeply grateful to my co-authors, collaborators, and everyone involved in this work. #PlantTaxonomy #Botany #Fabaceae #Machaerium #KewBulletin #Systematics #Biodiversity #Caatinga #PlantDiversity #NewSpecies
