RWE has selected a consortium consisting of Tecnicas Reunidas and GE for the project of a large hydrogen-compatible gas-fired power station (CCGT), with a nominal capacity of around 850 MW, at the Voerde site, in the North Rhine-Westphalia region, #Germany. The plant will be able to use 50pc natural gas and 50pc #hydrogen at the time of its commissioning, planned for 2030, and exclusively hydrogen later. This facility is part of RWE’s ongoing effort to build such generation units in some of its existing sites to contribute to the German government’s plan to complete the decommissioning of all coal-fired power plants by 2030. This CCGT is of the same type and capacity as the ones that RWE is planning for its Weisweiler and Gersteinwerk, for which a consortium also including Técnicas Reunidas was selected in 2023 and 2024, respectively. According to the recently presented plans for the construction of a hydrogen infrastructure in Germany, the Voerde plant will be located close to a hydrogen transport pipeline in the future. The approval planning services for the plant are already underway by the consortium formed by Técnicas Reunidas and GE Vernova. The scope of Técnicas Reunidas’ works will include the design engineering of the project, the supply of equipment and the construction, commissioning and start-up of the plant. General Electric will supply the gas turbine and the steam turbine, their corresponding generators, the heat recovery boiler and other equipment.
