The third and final day of the Gartner IAM Summit conference was about continuing the great conversations and learning more about products showcased on the expo floor. The day started with a keynote focused on the ongoing transition from ‘Digital Business’ to ‘Autonomous Business’. It was a great presentation with poignant content, but described as “somber” and “a bit terrifying” by a couple of the people I chatted with, due to the impact of ever-maturing AI capabilities. Real life examples demonstrated this transformation of business and a large shift of work to AI (from humans) and a fast-growing trend: ‘machine customers’. I felt the guidance to IAM professionals is to keep evolving one’s capabilities to enable this inevitable evolution, focusing on the balance of security with business results, but I’d love to hear other’s thoughts and takeaways. Many vendors claim to have a solution for your new AI challenges, some with their own AI secret sauce, but it’s too early to tell if these solutions will be sufficient or if they’ll have to evolve to maintain pace or even catch up with the real challenges AI presents. Time will tell which vendors will remain when the AI dust settles. I am, again, grateful for peers (some who even skipped sessions) to catch up and connect. I’m also thankful for the dozens of people working the booths, demoing their products and answering my many questions. Overall, it was a great conference and I look forward to the next one!
