Fatigue leaves traces. Not only in our behavior, but also in our saliva. ๐Ÿงช For the first time, a UZH research team has identified biomarkers that can detect acute sleep deprivation from a single saliva sample. This makes it possible to objectively measure something that has previously been assessed mainly through subjective reports or performance tests. In their study, the researchers analyzed saliva samples from healthy young men under different sleep conditions. Using high-resolution mass spectrometry and machine learning, they identified ten biomarkers that reliably indicate severe fatigue. The findings represent an important step forward for forensic research. ๐Ÿ”ฌ The patented biomarker set is now being tested in an international field study under real-world conditions. ๐Ÿš— In the long term, this could lead to a rapid test that objectively detects fatigue. The potential applications are broad, ranging from road safety to professions where attention and concentration are critical. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eNQJ8whJ #UZH #UniversityofZurich #SleepResearch Michael S.
