š¬ What if your next dental treatment was performed by a thumb-sized robot attached directly to your teeth? Prof. Dr. Ronald Jung from the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry, Center of Dental Medicine (ZZM), at the University of Zurich conceived the idea of using robotic technology for automated tooth preparation with the aim of making dental treatments more predictable, efficient, and minimally invasive. Together with Dr. Marc Balmer and PD Dr. Jenni Hjerppe (both at ZZM's Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry), Prof. Georg Rauter (University of Basel), Prof. Manuela Eugster (University of Bern), and their respective teams, they developed a miniature dental robot designed to automate dental procedures directly inside the patient's mouth. Attached directly to the teeth, the tiny device moves synchronously with the jaw to prepare teeth for crowns, inlays, or veneers with ultra-high precision. The working prototype demonstrates remarkable accuracy, with future models set to incorporate real-time sensor and camera monitoring for enhanced safety. š” Why it matters: This innovation aims to revolutionise dental care by significantly reducing treatment times and minimising the number of visits required.
