Could popular metabolic treatments hold the key to slowing down how quickly our brains age? An interdisciplinary team of researchers has launched the PROMOTE project to investigate whether GLP-1 receptor agonists, commonly known as the active ingredients in diabetes and weight loss therapies, can protect the brain. Supported by a generous four million Swiss Franc grant from the Horten Health Foundation, the study will examine if these well-tolerated metabolic drugs can actively slow down age-related changes in the brain and preserve cognitive fitness. 💡 Why it matters: Maintaining brain health is crucial for preserving mental independence, memory, and psychological well-being as we age. A prematurely aged brain is strongly linked to cognitive decline and mental health disorders, meaning successful preventive treatments could transform healthy aging and significantly reduce the societal burden of age-related illnesses. 👥 Shoutout to Philipp Homan, Flurin Cathomas, Heike A. Bischoff-Ferrari, and Tony Wyss-Coray, alongside the incredible teams at University of Zurich, the Psychiatrische Universitätsklinik Zürich, University of Basel, Stanford University, and the Horten Health Foundation for driving this vital, collaborative research forward! 📖 Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/eWyJqAyH #BrainHealth #HealthyAging #Neuroscience #ClinicalResearch #MedicalInnovation
