🔬 Did you know that not all genetic risk factors for Alzheimer's disease operate on the same timeline? A fascinating new study is shedding light on how our DNA influences the earliest stages of cognitive decline. The latest research published in the The EANM Journal investigates how the APOE4 gene, a major genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's, interacts with toxic brain proteins. The findings reveal that APOE4 carriers experience an accelerated spread of tau pathology even at lower levels of amyloid accumulation. Essentially, this specific gene variant facilitates a much earlier and faster spread of disease-causing proteins across connected brain regions. 💡 Why it matters: Unravelling the unique molecular pathways driven by the APOE4 gene provides critical insights for the early prediction of memory loss.
