Nina Hartwig pours the first bucket of food waste into the new composting drum acquired by UWM's Office of Sustainability. Purchased with the help of a grant from the City of Milwaukee FEED MKE program, the drum allows an expansion of the university's composting efforts. As a student intern, Hartwig started the Panther Pails program, which facilitates composting by students, and now oversees composting and related student engagement in the Office of Sustainability. The composting program helps divert campus food waste from going into landfills and provides compost for campus gardens. #EarthDay2026
