We're pleased to announce that University of Virginia associate professor David Nemer as the winner of the 2026 Center for an Informed Public Award for Impact & Excellence, which recognizes an individual or organization that has made outstanding contributions, achievements, or bodies of work that mitigates major information challenges that impact our civic health. Dr. Nemer is the author of "Technology of the Oppressed: Inequity and the Digital Mundane in Favelas of Brazil" (MIT Press, 2022) and co-leads the University of Virginia's Digital Technology for Democracy Lab. “One of Nemer’s key intellectual contributions is the development of the concept of the Human Infrastructure of Misinformation. This framework helps to explain how disinformation ecosystems operate on platforms that lack algorithmic curation,” Kevin Driscoll, an associate professor in the University of Virginia’s Department of Media Studies, wrote in a nomination letter. We're excited to host Dr. Nemer this fall during a visit to the University of Washington to engage with the CIP's research community in Seattle.
