An interdisciplinary University of Washington team has launched program to overcome one of the biggest challenges in stem cell–based therapies for diabetes: achieving the reliable and reproducible generation of fully functional pancreatic islets from multiple stem cell lines. The team, based in the UW Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine includes Bioengineering adjunct faculty members Hannele Ruohola-Baker and Karol Bomsztyk.
