Congratulations to Shana Fabio for winning the 2025 ITS Award for Security Excellence! This is a new award that honors a champion who strengthens UVA’s security posture. The honoree brings teams together to solve challenges, encourages adoption of best practices, and/or consistently advocates for protective practices within ITS and with partners across the University community. Shana served as project manager for a high-stakes effort that had been attempted unsuccessfully twice before. Under her leadership, the work resulted in the removal of approximately 3,500 IP addresses from a less-secure network. Shana facilitated dozens of meetings with the cleanup team and with distributed stakeholders who had assets on the target network, and she negotiated, documented, and tracked remediation for more than 600 active devices. This was not only technical work; it was persistent, detailed coordination across a distributed environment, with accountability built in at every step.
