The UVA Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering hosted a special seminar on April 30, 2026, featuring Venkataraman Lakshmi, John L. Newcomb Professor of Engineering. The seminar, “Success (or Lack Thereof) in Research: My Story,” attracted 50+ graduate students, undergraduate students, and faculty members from CEE and other departments, making it one of the most well-attended CEE seminars of the year. Drawing on over three decades of experience as a researcher, educator, and former National Science Foundation program director, Dr. Lakshmi shared candid reflections on the realities of research, emphasizing that challenges and setbacks are essential parts of the learning process. He discussed key elements of successful research careers, including proposal development, collaboration, clear communication, and the importance of engaging in the peer review process. The seminar resonated strongly with students and faculty alike, offering practical insights into navigating academic careers and developing leadership in research.
