On May 19, we co-hosted the AI + Environment Workshop, a vibrant interdisciplinary gathering organized in partnership between the Biocomplexity Institute and UVA Environmental Institute. We brought together researchers and practitioners from AI, environmental science, engineering, policy, and the social sciences to explore how intelligent systems can help address pressing environmental challenges and research questions. The day featured inspiring talks and lively discussions across extreme events, energy systems, socio-technical resilience, digital twins, and AI ethics. A major highlight was the diversity of perspectives in the room, which sparked rich exchange and surfaced both exciting opportunities and important open questions at the intersection of AI and environmental science. We are deeply grateful to all speakers and participants - who traveled from near and far - for their energy, insights, and engagement, which made the workshop a truly collaborative and forward-looking space: Auroop Ganguly, Kathleen Schiro, Quinn Thomas, Negin Alemazkoor, Antonios Mamalakis, Dorothy Leidner, Tom Hartvigsen, Michael Livermore, Paulina Jaramillo, Damian Pitt, Joao-Pedro Ferreira, Andres Clarens, Michael Lenox, Nagaraja Harshadeep, Jonathan Colmer, Abhijin Adiga, Samarth Swarup, Karen McGlathery, Madhav Marathe. Special thanks to the Environmental Institute for its partnership and leadership in making this event possible. We look forward to building on this momentum and continuing to strengthen collaborations across disciplines and the Commonwealth. #AI #ClimateScience #EnvironmentalScience #MachineLearning #Sustainability #Resilience #DigitalTwins #InterdisciplinaryResearch #UVA
