This Earth Day, we’re celebrating Longhorns working toward a more sustainable future. 🌍 🌱 Across campus and around the world, The University of Texas at Austin faculty, students, and alumni are leading efforts to address some of today’s most pressing environmental challenges. From advancing Ångstrom-scale science for clean water and energy to developing next-generation solar-powered data centers and rethinking wastewater systems for energy self-sufficiency, their research is driving real solutions. Our community is also protecting the planet’s biodiversity from Brazil to Bali—identifying key conservation areas, studying how species respond to climate change, and exploring ecosystem resilience. This work is being recognized globally, including Professor Camille Parmesan’s groundbreaking contributions to climate change ecology and Professor Guihua Yu’s international award for innovations in clean water. Beyond research, Longhorns are taking action on the ground. Students are studying sustainable development in Japan through Global Career Launch, designing environmentally sensitive projects in Mexico, and exploring ecosystems through Education Abroad programs around the world. Through partnerships like UT’s long-standing collaboration with Portugal and the President's Award for Global Learning project addressing water scarcity in Tanzania and Kenya, we continue to expand solutions that cross borders and disciplines. Together, this work reflects our commitment to advancing knowledge, protecting our planet and creating lasting global impact.
