This photograph shows USS CONSTITUTION at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, after a “barn” was constructed over its spar deck. Standing atop the structure is a row of about 70 individuals from Storer Post No. 1 of the Grand Army of the Republic. They gathered to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the fall of Fort Sumter in April 1861, a pivotal moment that marked the beginning of the American Civil War.
