Captured by Boston photographer James W. Black (1825–1896), this image shows USS CONSTITUTION (center) alongside USS Santee and USS Macedonian at Newport, Rhode Island, in the 1860s. At this time, the naval vessels served as school ships for midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy. They were moved from Annapolis, Maryland, to Newport at the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861 and remained there for the duration of the conflict.
