Can you spot a low-head dam while on the water? 👀 Sometimes, you can’t until it’s too late. April is Low-Head Dam Public Safety Awareness Month, and we want to remind you that low-head dams, known as “drowning machines,” pose serious dangers to waterway users who are unaware or struggle to identify them. Low-head dams can catch people in their recirculating currents, making it almost impossible to escape. That’s why it’s always important to plan your route ahead of time, bring necessary safety equipment, look for signage or other indicators of dams, and when in doubt, get out and scout. If you’re headed downstream and see something concerning ahead like boiling or bubbling water, get out to find a better vantage point, scout, and re-enter the water in a safe location.
