In a small village west of Nairobi, what began with subsistence farming has grown into a story of agricultural innovation and local leadership. Inspired by his farming roots, Robert Okayo pursued a career in plant breeding, driven by a desire to bring science into the work he saw his family and community doing. Today, Robert Okayo PhD is a rose breeder at Dümmen Orange, contributing to the development of resilient ornamentals and helping farmers across the region grow more with less—even under climate stress. His work in both agricultural and ornamental crops reflect the growing role of plant variety protection in supporting agricultural innovation, rural development, and youth empowerment in Africa.
