This graph is more interesting than it first appears. ⚡ It shows that while our paper and pulp mills are significant electricity consumers, they also generate electricity. Most of the energy our mills generate comes from combined heat and power (CHP) plants located at our pulp and paper mill sites. These plants are both energy and CO2 efficient energy installations. Today, 81% of the fuels we use are biomass based. In Finland, the high green bar of electricity generation reflects the diverse portfolio of UPM Energy, consisting of hydro, nuclear and thermal power assets – 99% of the portfolio being CO₂ free. This electricity is daily offered to the Nordic electricity market. So, this may become as a surprise to you, but we are actually the second largest electricity producer in Finland. This graph, and many more insights, can be found in our Annual Report: https://go.upm.com/4swjWuN
