How anticipating the future of education improves our decision-making today: the role of our scientific research 🚀🎓 As part of our seminar series, yesterday we had the opportunity to hear from Nicole Johnson (Executive Director of the CDLRA/ACRFL) in a highly insightful session at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya: "Imagining the Future of Education: Studying Expectations, Change, and Emerging Technologies." The session was introduced by our director, Albert Sangrà. The core premise is clear: researching the future isn't about "predicting" what will happen, but rather understanding how our current expectations, hopes, and fears shape present-day policies and decisions. 🔍 Key takeaways from the session and the data presented: 🤖 The impact of AI and new skills: results from the CDLRA’s longitudinal survey indicate that artificial intelligence will radically transform the educational experience. The focus will shift towards developing critical thinking and the ability to discern the accuracy of AI-generated information. 👩‍🏫 The crisis of traditional assessment: it is anticipated that traditional methods (such as conventional exams) will become increasingly difficult to enforce, driving an inevitable evolution towards new assessment practices. 🗓️ Scenarios for 2026: through interviews with teaching staff, three plausible near-term scenarios have been identified: hybrid working, high-tech learning, and a return to the pre-pandemic status quo. ☺️ Optimism vs. Pessimism: the sense of readiness across institutions fluctuates. Interestingly, in 2025, only 27% of respondents felt fully prepared for future changes. Factors such as funding, government support, and institutional openness to change are key drivers of these perceptions. 🛠️ Methodologies for rigorous research: 🎯 Johnson emphasised that conducting valid futures research in academic settings requires replicable and reliable methods. These include: ❓ Longitudinal surveys to track shifts in perception over time. 🗣️ Semi-structured interviews to gather rich, nuanced data on "near-future" scenarios (looking 5 years ahead). 🔜 "Story Completion" exercises to explore long-term human-AI interaction (looking 20 years ahead). 🧠 This session serves as a powerful reminder that educator agency and institutional support are the vital pillars that will allow us to turn current anxieties into true opportunities for transformation. #EdTech #DigitalLearning #FutureOfEducation #HigherEducation #eLearning #researchUOC
