AI power is concentrating, and its pace is accelerating. Human agency is increasingly under pressure. In a new interview with BBC News, Maria Ressa, Co-Chair of the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI, draws on the Panel’s Preliminary Report to explain what the concentration of AI capabilities means for countries and people worldwide. One sign of that pressure is already visible: people are turning to chatbots for therapy and companionship faster than evidence and safeguards are keeping pace. The report’s message is that AI’s benefits are not automatic and its harms are not inevitable; outcomes depend on the institutions and policies around the technology.
