Can science guide global cooperation on AI governance? Last Friday at the United Nations, the General Assembly held an interactive dialogue with Maria Ressa (Philippines) and Yoshua Bengio (Canada), Co-Chairs of the Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence, ahead of the Panel's preliminary report, to be released in July. A key message from the session: consensus among 40 scientists from across the world is, at its core, evidence that common ground is possible. 🔹 “If science can hold together across those divides, then governance can too.” - Maria Ressa 🔹 “Decisions made today regarding AI by governments around the world will have lasting consequences.” - Yoshua Bengio Active engagement from Member States reflected growing interest in the Panel's preliminary findings across seven thematic areas — from AI capabilities and human rights to economic implications and child safety — with the report set to inform discussions at the inaugural Global Dialogue on AI Governance, to be held 6–7 July in Geneva.
