Discrimination doesn’t only affect people when it happens—it can also harm health when people anticipate it in advance. New UBC-led research finds that ‘bracing’ for potential discrimination is a common part of everyday life and can amplify stress and physical symptoms like fatigue, headaches and muscle soreness. The findings point to the long-term health consequences of living in environments where people expect unfair treatment—and underscore the importance of creating more inclusive, welcoming spaces.
