After more than 25 years working in the oil fields of Deming, New Mexico, Javier Diaz’s routine day turned into a life-changing moment when he suffered a severe electrical burn injury. Javier was airlifted to UMC, where he has been receiving specialized care from Dr. Philip E. Fidler, director of UMC El Paso's Burn Center and associate professor of burn, trauma, and acute care at Texas Tech Health El Paso. “I am a miracle. I am a miracle. Saved by God, and then Dr. Fidler took over,” Javier said. The El Paso Burn Center, part of the 2024 voter-approved bond project, is the first of its kind in the region. While the establishment of the burn unit is underway, it is already providing life-saving care to patients like Javier, allowing them to remain close to home instead of traveling out of town for treatment. Before, patients with similar injuries were often airlifted to Lubbock, nearly 300 miles away, for specialized care. Today, that level of treatment is available right here in El Paso. #UMCElPaso #UMCBurnCenter
