We are deeply saddened by the passing of Emeritus Professor Ken McKinnon AO, the University of Wollongong’s second Vice-Chancellor, who served from 1981 to 1994. Professor McKinnon’s legacy is profound. He led UOW through a period of remarkable transformation, guiding a young regional university to national prominence with clear vision, strong conviction, and an unwavering commitment to people. He understood that a great university is not only built through strategy, but through culture that values innovation, inclusivity and real-world impact. A visionary leader, Ken’s impact on UOW continues to shape who we are today. During his tenure, he oversaw significant growth and ambition, expanding academic disciplines, strengthening research and teaching, leading the amalgamation with the Wollongong Institute of Education, developing UOW’s iconic campus, and establishing the University’s first international campus in Dubai. These were bold steps that positioned UOW for the future. Following his retirement, he remained closely connected to UOW. Together with his wife, Sue Walker, he made significant philanthropic contributions that continue to support students, researchers, and new ideas. Their generosity will have a lasting impact on future generations. We extend our sincere condolences to Sue, his family and loved ones, and to all who knew and worked with him. Details of a UOW memorial will be shared with the community soon.
