⚽ As soccer fans from every corner of the globe make their way to Washington for the World Cup, The Puyallup Tribe of Indians are leading that welcome from the South Sound. With one World Cup match already in the rearview, Seattle will host five more this month, placing our region at the center of an international soccer celebration that spans the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Puyallup Tribe, whose people have lived along the shores of the South Puget Sound since time immemorial, made history as the first Indigenous nation to formally partner with a World Cup host city. ❤️🖤 As Seattle's Official Legacy Supporter for the FIFA World Cup, the Puyallup Tribe will be at the heart of local activities and cultural programming — a significant milestone for Indigenous representation on the global stage. Tacoma Huskies have found meaningful ways to make the most of the moment. 💜 🐾 On Monday afternoons during spring quarter, students gathered in the Office of Indigenous Engagement syayəʔadiʔ (Family Room) to create beaded gifts intended for World Cup visitors at celebrations hosted by the tribe. In Lushootseed, the Puyallup people are known as spuyaləpabš, meaning "generous and welcoming behavior to all people." The student-made beadwork follows that same spirit.
