A team of Dutch innovators and scientists from the University of Twente has introduced a smart brace that actively supports the lower back during work. The need is urgent. In Europe, an estimated 7.5 million nurses and caregivers face heavy physical strain, with nearly half suffering from lower back pain. On average, a healthcare worker performs more than 1,000 physically straining movements per shift. The smart brace provides support when physical strain occurs. It activates during lifting and bending movements, and relaxes when the user returns to a neutral posture. In field tests, users felt supported while working with the brace. They also reported lower perceived physical effort and worked more upright on average. The research has led to the creation of UT spin-off Orthevo, founded to bring the innovation to life. UT researchers Dr. Malte Asseln and Daan Legters explain how the smart brace was developed and how the technology is now being taken furtherย (NL & EN): https://lnkd.in/eZ5eBu3V #utwente #health - TechMed Centre - University of Twente
