Outstanding recognition for University of Tartu researchers.👏 Estonian Academy of Sciences members Jaak Vilo, Professor of Bioinformatics, and Martin Zobel, Professor Emeritus of Plant Ecology, have been elected Members of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) in recognition of their outstanding research achievements. EMBO is one of Europe's leading scientific organisations dedicated to promoting excellence in the life sciences. It brings together more than 2,200 leading researchers, including more than 90 Nobel laureates. Until now, four scientists from Estonia have been elected to EMBO membership. Jaak Vilo's research focuses on computer science, algorithms, data analysis, and the development of open research infrastructures and services. The software he has developed has enabled discoveries in biology, including studies of gene regulation, receptor function, and disease mechanisms. Martin Zobel's species pool concept has had a major international impact on ecological theory, while his research on interactions between plants and mycorrhizal fungi has opened new perspectives on understanding plant communities. He has also pioneered the introduction of DNA-based molecular approaches into ecological research. Congratulations to Jaak Vilo and Martin Zobel on this distinguished recognition, which further strengthens the international visibility of Estonian science. Read more👇 https://lnkd.in/dqkeJdRV --- Silmapaistev tunnustus Tartu Ülikooli teadlastele.👏 Eesti Teaduste Akadeemia liikmed, bioinformaatika professor Jaak Vilo ja taimeökoloogia emeriitprofessor Martin Zobel valiti Euroopa Molekulaarbioloogia Organisatsiooni (EMBO) liikmeteks, tunnustades nende silmapaistvaid teadussaavutusi. EMBO on Euroopa üks prestiižsemaid teadusorganisatsioone, mis edendab tipptaset eluteadustes. See ühendab üle 2200 juhtiva teadlase, sealhulgas rohkem kui 90 Nobeli preemia laureaati. Seni on Eestist EMBO liikmeks valitud neli teadlast. Jaak Vilo teadustöö keskendub arvutiteadusele, algoritmidele, andmeanalüüsile ning avatud taristu ja teenuste arendamisele. Tema loodud tarkvara on võimaldanud avastusi bioloogias, sealhulgas geeniregulatsiooni, retseptorite töö ja haigusseoste uurimisel. Martin Zobeli arendatud liigifondi kontseptsioon on mõjutanud ökoloogilist teooriat rahvusvaheliselt ning uurimused taimede ja mükoriisaseente koosmõjust avanud uusi vaatenurki taimekoosluste mõistmisel. Samuti on ta toonud ökoloogiasse DNA-analüüsil põhineva molekulaarse lähenemise.
