PENALTIES ⚽️🫣 New research shows penalty shootouts may be far more strategic than previously thought - and the team kicking first might not always hold the advantage. Research co-authored by Professor Matthew Crowder found teams kicking second were far more likely to face high-pressure ‘avoid-loss’ penalties, and more likely to experience moments when they were shooting to win. In elite international football, around 60 per cent of penalties were converted when missing meant immediate elimination.
