PENALTIES ⚽️🫣 New research shows penalty shootouts may be far more strategic than previously thought - and the team kicking first might not always hold the advantage. Research co-authored by Professor Matthew Crowder found teams kicking second were far more likely to face high-pressure ‘avoid-loss’ penalties, and more likely to experience moments when they were shooting to win. In elite international football, around 60 per cent of penalties were converted when missing meant immediate elimination. But when scoring meant victory, almost 90 per cent of players found the back of the net. Find out more:
