A new report authored by Professor Katy Mason, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dean of Salford Business School, has been published today by the Higher Education Policy Institute. "A clear and present danger: Investing in collaborative platforms to accelerate the transition to a green economy" sets out a compelling case for why universities must scale up collaboration to address the climate emergency. The report highlights that while higher education institutions are uniquely positioned to drive change across research, education and innovation, progress is being slowed by fragmented efforts, disciplinary silos and constrained resources. Its central message is clear: no single institution can tackle this challenge alone. Instead, the paper calls for greater investment in collaborative platforms - bringing together academia, industry, policymakers and communities to co-develop and scale real-world solutions. Key recommendations include: š¹ Reforming incentives to better support interdisciplinary, impact-driven research š¹ Expanding green skills through curricula, short courses and apprenticeships š¹ Strengthening knowledge exchange to translate research into action š¹ Establishing a UK-wide network of collaboration platforms, supported by a proposed Ā£650m Green Innovation Challenge Fund At the University of Salford, we remain committed to working with partners locally, nationally and globally to accelerate the transition to a sustainable and inclusive green economy.
