Scientists from the University of Portsmouth are supporting UK-based charity Keep Me Breathing as they take on a 1,000-mile cycle ride from Arundel to Austria for Ride for Rare. Ahead of the challenge, the University's Extreme Environments Laboratories (EEL) will collect physiological data to help validate a new respiratory monitoring device designed to support people living with rare and chronic conditions. The charity was founded by James Oakley following his son Casper's diagnosis with Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CCHS), a rare condition that affects the autonomic nervous system's control of breathing.
