Die Wälder der Europäischen Union bedecken rund 40 Prozent der Landfläche und binden jährlich etwa 280 Millionen Tonnen Kohlendioxid- (CO₂-) Äquivalente. Dabei handelt es sich um eine standardisierte Maßeinheit, die die Klimawirkung verschiedener Treibhausgase vergleichbar macht. Doch diese Leistung ist rückläufig. Zwar wächst der Kohlenstoffvorrat in den Wäldern weiter, doch hat sich ihre Aufnahmekapazität zwischen 2010 und 2020 um fast ein Drittel verringert. Was genau hinter diesem Rückgang steckt, hat ein internationales Forschungsteam unter Leitung von Prof. Dr. Mana Gharun vom Institut für Landschaftsökologie der Universität Münster untersucht. This is a standardised unit of measurement that makes the climate impact of various greenhouse gases comparable. However, this performance is declining. While the carbon stock in the forests continues to grow, their absorption capacity has decreased by almost a third between 2010 and 2020. What exactly lies behind this decline has been investigated by an international research team led by Prof. Dr. @Mana Gharun from the Institute of Landscape Ecology at the University of Münster in a comprehensive review study.
