Researchers from the Faculty of Arts have reached a record milestone in the 50 Words Project, preserving audio recordings of 50 unique words in 100 different Indigenous languages, helping to bring these words to life online for people to hear. Professor Rachel Nordlinger said this is the first time words from Indigenous languages have been brought together where people can hear words spoken by members of those language groups at scale. The online resource has been developed to bring together translations from Indigenous languages across Australia, alongside recordings from community speakers. Widely used in schools, language programs and Indigenous communities, users can access the interactive map to explore and listen to spoken words from members of those communities.
