Australia imports around 90 per cent of its refined fuel, mostly from Asian refineries that depend on Middle Eastern crude. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz since the Middle East conflict in February has left Australia's fuel supply under threat. While the shift to EVs is a huge part of the climate puzzle, what happens to the sectors that can't easily plug into a battery? Australia's plan to reach net-zero by 2050 is to substitute fossil-derived natural gas with biomethane - a sustainable methane source derived from breaking down organic waste. This could reduce emissions, enhance energy resilience and stimulate the growth of a circular economy.
