🚨News Alert: The University of Johannesburg today hosted the Honourable Minister Solly Malatsi for a high-level engagement and the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding linked to its newly awarded UNESCO Chair: Cultural Inclusivity and Equity in Digital Media in Africa. Led by Vice-Chancellor Prof Letlhokwa Mpedi, the engagement underscores UJ’s growing influence in shaping Africa’s digital future through research, policy, and innovation. Held within the UJ Faculty of Humanities and chaired by UJ’s Prof. Prinola Govenden , the UNESCO Chair will drive critical work over the next four years, focusing on digital inclusion, internet governance, cultural representation, and strategies to decolonise the internet in Africa. This strategic partnership reinforces South Africa’s leadership in digital transformation and strengthens collaboration between academia and government to advance inclusive, equitable, and locally relevant digital innovation across the continent. We also extend our appreciation to the distinguished speakers who contributed to this important engagement, including Prof Kammila Naidoo, Executive Dean of the UJ Faculty of Humanities; Mr Carlton Mukwevho, Secretary General of the South African National Commission for UNESCO (NatCom); Nompilo Morafo, Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer at MTN; Amos Hadebe, Government and Policy Advocacy Executive for Africa at Ericsson South Africa; and Adv. Mtho Xulu , President of the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI), whose insights continue to enrich dialogue on Africa’s digital future.
