When Teboho Mokoena scored South Africa’s equalising goal against Czechia at the FIFA World Cup on 18 June 2026, the impact extended far beyond the football pitch. According to Professor Talita Greyling, Director of the Centre for Well-being, AI and Social Impact (C.WAIS) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), South Africa experienced a remarkable surge in happiness following the goal. Using data from the Gross National Happiness Index, a real-time measure of national wellbeing, researchers found that happiness levels reached heights typically associated with the happiest Saturdays of the year, despite the match taking place on a Thursday, a day that generally records lower wellbeing scores. The findings highlight the powerful role that sport can play in fostering social cohesion, collective optimism and national pride. Previous research also suggests that the positive emotional effects of such sporting moments can endure for several days after the event. As Bafana Bafana continues its World Cup campaign, the research provides a compelling reminder of sport’s ability to unite and inspire a nation.
