In 2026, the University of Johannesburg Law Clinic marks 45 years of advancing access to justice while shaping generations of socially conscious legal professionals. Since its establishment in 1981, the Clinic has grown from a pioneering initiative involving just 18 students into a cornerstone of UJ Law’s academic and community-engagement mission. Over four and a half decades, it has provided essential legal services to thousands of indigent clients while offering students invaluable practical legal training. As Director of the UJ Law Clinic, Natasha Naidoo notes, the Clinic has long been a trusted institution where communities find not only legal assistance, but also dignity and justice. This milestone celebrates a proud legacy of service, legal education and social impact, while reaffirming UJ’s commitment to building a more just and equitable society.
