Students don't all arrive at university with the same experiences, confidence or academic preparation, but too often, higher education has treated them as though they do.   The transition from secondary and further education into higher education has become increasingly complex, with growing variation in students' prior learning, digital skills, study habits and expectations.    Understanding these differences is essential if universities are to provide the right support from the very beginning.   The national Pre-arrival Academic Questionnaire (PAQ) is helping to bridge this gap.
