An incredibly proud moment for the entire University of East London community. Our Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Amanda J. Broderick, has officially received the Freedom of the City of London honour. Dating back to 1237, this prestigious and historic tradition recognises individuals who have made truly outstanding contributions to London and public life. Amanda was approved for the Freedom in May 2024, nominated by the then Lord Mayor, Alderman Alastair King, with the support of Lord Mayor Michael Mainelli. During the ceremony, a short citation by former Lord Mayor Michael Mainelli was read out, in which he described Amanda as a "leader, bridge-builder, and champion of opportunity," highlighting how she has "combined academic rigour with real-world impact." At UEL, we are immensely proud to bridge the heritage of the City with the massive potential of east London, driving inclusive growth and ensuring that talent from every background has the opportunity to thrive. The connection between London’s historic core and its dynamic eastern gateway has never been more vital, and this recognition is a testament to Professor Broderick’s visionary leadership in making that connection a reality. Please join us in sending the warmest congratulations to Professor Broderick on this monumental milestone! #TeamUEL #FreedomOfTheCityLondon
