When Dr Maryam Sousani received her PhD this March, she felt both joy and sorrow – it was the celebration of a major milestone, but one she sadly couldn't share with her parents in Iran. Nonetheless, she’s grateful for the love and support that has surrounded her throughout the challenges and triumphs of her PhD journey. “One thing I’ve learned: Life keeps moving, and so do we. I’m grateful for the strength this journey has given me, and I promise myself to keep growing, keep trying, and make my family proud,” Maryam says. She's also thankful for the opportunity to continue her biomedical engineering work to help community – while her PhD focused on a multimodal system to measure changes in brain activity in people living with Parkinson's disease, Maryam has been able to apply her approach to research into children's hearing and how it might impact language development, in a role with Hearing Australia.
