As autonomous drones become increasingly common, UC Irvine researchers have identified a surprising way to stop them. Using an ordinary umbrella printed with a specially designed graphic pattern, the team demonstrated how autonomous target-tracking drones can be lured off course, trapped in a net or even forced to crash. The findings, which have important implications for border security, law enforcement and personal privacy, were presented at a leading cybersecurity conference earlier this year. The drones can be captured by nets or forced into collisions using a unique pattern on a standard umbrella. šŸ’µ The research was supported by funding from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Science Foundation (NSF) #SpeakUp4Science
